    Information sessions are hosted to expose both emerging contractors and interested individuals to the construction industry. The sessions typically involve highlighting the importance of compliance with the various construction industry councils and requirements to be compliant with them. While also providing advice on technical issues, finance, and databases for work opportunities.

    Contractor Training

    The construction industry plays a vital role in South Africa’s socio-economic development and is a significant contributor to post-Covid economic recovery. It also plays a crucial role in the development of skills, job creation and the regeneration of the township economy.

    Annually, the Contractor and Developer Academy incubates a cohort of emerging contractors through annual contractor training course, advisory & technical support, and mentorship for them to participate effectively in the construction industry.

    The CDA also plays a crucial role on a higher level, where it advocates for the creation of an enabling environment for contractors to access work opportunities.

    Emerging contractors have varying needs, from start-ups who need the knowledge of running construction projects and businesses, to more established small firms who need to improve their performance and grow. The CDA customises each annual training course to suit contractor needs. Some of the themes covered in the course include:

    Mentorship

    The mentorship programme is structured to assist emerging contractors on their journey of establishing and managing sustainable businesses. The emerging contractors are allocated mentors who provide guidance and support. The programme entails one-on-one and group sessions.

    “Through CDA Contractor Training, I have acquired several business and leadership skills. I was introduced to appropriate business and project management tools so I can run and grow my construction company effectively, and I have seen so much growth in my business. As our business is growing, we also seek to empower other young people, particularly those who are most vulnerable – women living with disabilities. Word Sister Primary co-op has grown its footprint in the construction industry, we now operate across the Cape Metro and beyond and we have diversified the services we provide, tendering projects from both public and private sectors, and also engaging in joint ventures. We are moving with time – being innovative and responding to the current needs. Our company grew from CIDB 1 to CIDB 2, and upon completing our current projects we will be moving to CIDB 3.
